Yes that's what I need to do from what i've read. So in that case should I be using 300 as the Hfe?

I'd use a 2k2 resistor in the base circuit if you are switching the base with 12V. If you are using 5V I'd use about 1k. Remember too that the gain will drop as the collector current increases (see the datasheet).

Now improved the way Ford should have built it with a 4speed automatic.

Also with 3.45 LSD for added goodness.
