Commodore V6 VN Bellytank

Post by reverend hedgash »

G'day all,

we have built a V6 Commodore Bellytank racer which went 160mph on a stock engine (except for porting and heavier springs) last year at Lake Gairdner.

This year we are looking at going 200mph with a better bottom end and a mild cam.

The stock computer cuts out at 6500rpm and we want to go over 7000 (and have the tuning advantages of the Megasquirt.)

I have assembled a megasquirt 2 and got it running with the sim... now for the rest:

I could faff around testing this and that but the problem is that we only have three weeks to get it up and running so can anyone please help with advice and what to be weary of in running this on a VN V6 as we don't have time for mistakes!

Does any one have a link to someone who has done it for a Commodore? I cant' seem to find one, a lot of talk but no action.

Any help greatly appreciated, help that gets us successfully running specifically will be considered part of the team.

Going for 4 Australian landspeed records this year.

For more info on the car and our epic six year journey to get where we are, see:

Thats a nice project there.

I have done a few megasquirt installs before but never a commodore V6. I looked into it once as a mate wanted one but never went through with it. The Commodore V6 should be pretty straight forward. The only vehicle specific thing to look at would be the ignition. The follow link should have the info you need for the ignition.

For the rest just follow the manual.

Where are you located? If you want anymore help let us know.

Daniel.

That's good news, thanks for the reply and the link.

We are building in Sunshine Victoria.

Don't forget to have a look at the MS2 Extra code. It can run indiviual coil packs and decode a number of different crank-angle-sensors.

http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms2extra/ and the link to the forums http://www.msextra.com/index.php.

There is also a version of Extra code that can run 4 fuel injector channels sequentially but it does require some tricky mods to the MS2 daughter board & some changes to the main board. Read about it here http://www.jbperf.com/sequential/index.html#ms2mods

I am going to try the extra code when my second MS2 kit arrives. I'm hoping to try the sequential code too in a paired-cylinder/wasted-spark set-up on a v8.

Hope this is of some help and good luck with the magnificent looking salt-lake beasty.

Thanks, I shall investigate.

At the moment though we have a more frustrating problem, that being the RPM counter doesn't work when we attached with the stim. I cannot remember if it did work either when I made it either (a couple of years ago now) which is also frustration (getting old).

So with such a short time we are going for a memcal reprogram for this year's run knocking out the rpm cutoff.

I have organised to borrow a stim to see if that is the problem, then work backwards to get it operating virtually before going for the car.

the good old family driveabout is a VN wagon so it will be the test bed for the first effort.

stay tuned.

If you have the MS configured for the VR Tach input, then sometimes they don't like to trigger off the stim. Make sure the software is setup for "basic trigger" and the 2 pots are turned full counter clockwise.

There is lots of info about "chipping" delco computers at this link. http://www.delcohacking.net/forums/

Cheers
